Voles are quite disruptive and destructive to homes and gardens. Voles are herbivores and primarily feed on the roots, stems, and bulbs of plants. While their vegetarian nature means they will often keep to your garden, they can make nests in homes if the opportunity presents itself. They create intricate tunnels and burrow systems just beneath the surface of the ground, which can lead to the destruction of lawns, gardens, and agricultural crops. Voles can be a serious problem for farmers, and the vole’s bread and butter are crops and seeds.

Voles can be a tricky pest to deal with, but they’re one that we have plenty of experience with. We use a combination of trapping, baits, and repellents to get rid of voles. Primarily, we set up snap traps baited with food like apples or a combination of peanut butter and oatmeal. We tend to position these traps along vole pathways or close to their exit burrows. To ensure safety for pets or kids and provide a sense of safety for the target vole, we typically also cover the trap with a container or box with a small vole-shaped hole cut into it.

We also help by modifying the vole’s habitat. We remove excess brush and shelter, making it harder for the voles to evade capture from predators. We occasionally also use chemical deterrents, but these vary in effectiveness depending on the weather and season (as the rain can wash the chemicals away).

Maintaining a well-maintained lawn and garden is key. Regularly mowing the grass, removing weeds, and keeping the area clean can deter voles from creating burrows. Planting vole-resistant species and using protective barriers, such as wire mesh, around the base of trees and shrubs can also be effective.
